Volunteers Team Up For Clean Up Drive in Ras Al Khaimah’s Wadi Showka Dam

10 October 2019

Volunteers from all over the emirates joined forces to clean and collect almost 500 kilos of waste at Wadi Showka Dam to help preserve its natural beauty. Wadi Showka is a diverse area with many route options for hiking, running, cycling, and welcomes even those who simply want to camp out in nature – attracting thousands of nature-adventure enthusiasts from around the country and beyond.

Organized by Adventurati Outdoor, an adventure tour company specialized in mountain activities in Ras Al Khaimah, the clean-up initiative also attracted volunteers from Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA), Public Works and Services Department (PWSD), SANID and Takatof.

Raki Philips, Chief Executive Officer of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority said, “While a competitive tourism offering is key to ensuring the Emirate’s wider appeal, sustainability continues to be at the heart of our tourism strategy. As a destination with invaluable natural assets, it is our shared responsibility to inspire and educate residents and visitors about the importance of preserving the natural environment and acting responsibly to minimize negative impact.”

Fadi Hachicho, Founder of Adventurati Outdoor said, “We want to start the new season by getting the community to join us outdoors and doing so for a cause. Each one of us has a responsibility towards the environment. It is our responsibility to keep it clean, sustainable and spreading awareness about the importance of protecting it. Together we can reduce the impact on the environment. We follow “Leave No Trace” program to create the habit of “Take nothing but memories, leave nothing but foot prints” when enjoying the outdoors. It is simply everyone’s responsibility.”

His Excellency Eng. Ahmed Al Hammadi, Director General of the General Services Department emphasized the importance of prioritizing sustainability and ensuring the optimal use of natural resources to protect them for future generations. “Preserving the environment around us is essential for the health and wellbeing of our community. It is key for local departments to join forces and raise awareness around sustainability and environmental cleanliness in order to achieve effective and positive results in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah”.
