Six winners in the first Round of the Environmental Sustainability Award in Ras Al-Khaimah 2020
Environmental Authority of Ras Al Khaimah announces the names of private and government organizations that won the Environment sustainability award 2020.
The Environmental Protection Authority of Ras Al Khaimah has announced the names of governmental and private entities that won the, Environmental Sustainability Award 2020 in its first session. Fourteen different governmental organizations and industrial establishments participated in the award. Department of Economic Development, won the first rank in all participating government organization, followed by Ras Al Khaimah Transportation came on the second place, while the Federal Authority for Electricity and Water on the third place. UTICO won the first position, in all the industrial sector, while Ras Al Khaimah Ceramics on the second place, followed by Stephen Rock on third.
Dr. Saif Mohamed Al-Ghais, Director General of the Environmental Protection and Development Authority said that this award comes in the framework of the authority’s endeavor to achieve sustainable development and to achieve the vision and directions of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council of the Union and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council. This award supports the strategic goals of the authority, which is to enhance governmental and private sectors participation in environmental awareness, reduce their environmental footprint and involve them in contributing the environmental awareness in all segments of the society.
“The Environmental Sustainability Award aims to consolidate the principles of sustainable development, and generalize the concept of environmental culture among various sectors of society. It also aims to enhance the sense of societal environmental responsibility as well as to activate the targeted and distinguished environmental activities in the environmental field. It seeks to estimate and encourage the outstanding contributions in conservation of environment, by institutions excellence and innovation”
Al-Ghais added that the award’s participants were evaluated on three basis criteria. First criteria were, the policies supporting environmental sustainability in the region; existence of plan, goals and regulations that support environmental sustainability. Second was, the environmental initiatives to protect the environment and the sustainability of natural resources; their justifications and needs for the initiatives established in the regions and their diversity, the third criterion was the results and effects of these initiatives and the benefit of them, on the stakeholders and beneficiaries.
Dr. Saif Mohamed Al-Ghais affirmed the authority’s keenness to affirm the principles of sustainable development and generalize the concept of environmental culture. The Environmental Sustainability Award aims to consolidate the broad concept of environmental management in the emirate. This award represents one of the important pillars to encourage environmental work and to spread awareness and to encourage the spirit of competition between the local, federal, and private sectors in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, to achieve and apply best environmental practices in the field of environmental conservation. This was reflected in the evaluation results of achievement, of the entities, participating in the award for the indicators and measures included in the standards. The most important of which were, the proportion of environment friendly technologies used in the competitors and the percentage of reducing the carbon footprint and reducing electricity and water consumption.
Al-Ghais added that the Environmental Sustainability Award is one of the four awards, that authority has launched, in the past three years, as a pioneering qualitative shift from merely practicing environmental awareness traditionally to create and manage a package of international innovative awards such as a Feminine Monitoring for Sustainable Environment Award. In addition to local awards such as Student Teams for Environment Protection Award, Innovate Environmentally Remotely, and the Environmental Sustainability Award that brought about a significant change in the environmental commitment of government institutions and industrial establishments.
